What is Autoimmunity?

“Genetics load the gun, but environment pulls the trigger.”

It is currently understood there are over 80 autoimmune diseases which result in our immune system misfiring at healthy cells as invaders and consequently attacks on the body’s cells which make up our own tissues and organs resulting in inflammation, pain, loss of function and damaging tissue.

Dr Francis of the National Institute of Health (NIH) eloquently quotes ”genetics loads the gun but environment, including diet pulls the trigger”. In fact, genes account for 30% of the propagation of autoimmunity. Whilst there may not be a “cure’’ for autoimmune disease, the appropriate diet and lifestyle for you, may help slow down progression, and keep you in long term remission.

We know if there is prominence of one autoimmune condition, we are likely to have another. This certainly was my prognosis and whilst this can feel quite overwhelming, there is exciting evidence supporting the relationship of food, diet, environmental and emotional factors all play a pivotal role in supporting the immune system in autoimmunity.

I work with you as an individual to unravel and pinpoint what the trigger for your immune system presents, and work on re- balancing you as a whole
